Unhealthy Relatives

by Duong Sheahan

I believe that our spiritual and emotional-well being sets the course for our overall health.

There are three relatives that we need to get rid of immediately if we are going to live healthier and happier, and that is worry, fear, and doubt. I heard my Pastor say this best, “Worry is the sick child to fear and fear and doubt are the parents who birthed worry.” I could not agree more with this statement! This really sums it up and I can just end it now with an Amen!

With everything that is going on in our world today, we need to more than ever have faith. Faith is what will get us through these trying times. Faith is not just another warm fuzzy word. Faith is an action word for those who dare to walk it. In times of adversity or trouble, we need to decide what relatives we are going to hang around with: worry, fear, and doubt or faith and hope, and love?

Did you know that love casts out fear? There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment (1John 4:18).

If we want to live healthier and happier in these days, we most definitely need to choose the latter. Psalms 112:7 encourages us to not fear bad news; but to confidently trust the LORD to care for us.

There is a song by Bobby McFeren, from the 90s that needs to be a remake or resurrected, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” I have a favorite verse that I have been humming since I can’t carry a tune: When you worry you make it double..Don’t bring everybody down. Don’t worry. It will soon pass, whatever it is. Don’t worry, be happy. That’s what I’m singing, how about you?

Again, we have the power to choose and today, let’s choose to get rid of those unhealthy relatives of worry, fear, and doubt that is robbing us from walking in faith, which is ultimately what produces the impossible in our life!

Outstanding Duong! Very well-written and eloquent. I believe that fear and doubt reside inside all of us, alongside faith and hope. It is up to us to choose which side wins. This is something I still need to remind myself of daily, so your blog came at a great time for me. Hope you and the Fam are doing well…miss you!

Wow, that was a great post. I am trying to live by the advice in that Psalm every day and when worry tries to get in I acknowledge it and then send it on its way by reminding myself that God has promised to take care of me and I trust in the fact that He always keeps His promises!
