Silence is Golden

Have you been to the movies lately? Usually right before the featured film, you’ll hear a baby crying, a cell phone ringing, and a message that says, “Silence is Golden!” Why? Because you can spoil the show for those sitting around you by talking!

Talking too much may not only spoil a good  movie but can really put a damper on some relationships too. I don’t know about you but my tongue has gotten me into some  trouble  in the past! I read a verse recently in Proverbs that says (paraphrasing), “Those who talk too much are likely to offend. But those who have power over their tongues are wise.”

There is a good reason why God gave us only one mouth and two ears…to listen more and talk less. How many relationships have been destroyed because we allow our mouth to run wild?

I’ve learned  to keep my mouth shut, especially when I’m tempted to blurt out what’s on my mind. There is wisdom when to talk and when to keep silent. Not only can our tongue be used to be self destructive, but it can be used negatively to really hurt others. I’m sure keeping my mouth shut in certain situation has improved my marriage over the years! It can help in any relationship for that matter.

Even fools are thought wise when they keep silent; with their mouths shut, they seem intelligent (Proverbs 17:28).  “Silence is Golden!”

Too true! I seem to remember a verse from the New Testament talking about how the tongue can light a forest ablaze. A very powerful instrument. I think one the reasons we have to be careful so much is that we often don’t run our words through our brains first. You know what I mean? Our emotions often get the better of us.

Great post!
