Vacation, Visiting Ground Zero & Remembering 9-11

by Duong Sheahan on September 11, 2009

Our East Coast trip was a vacation with a little education. We flew into La Guardia airport, rented a car, and put on a few hundred miles visiting several amazing historic cities.

My husband had to fly out on business for a day while we were in Boston, but that didn’t keep me from taking the kids out to explore  Boston’s North End. The kids survived my “Moses” moment (Remember? An 11 day journey that took 40 years) as  we circled Boston for almost two hours. It should have only taken fifteen minutes! It’s the GPS system’s fault.

We finally found our way and attempted to walk the entire route of The Freedom Trail, but unfortunately had to call it a day just before crossing the bridge to  USS Constitution. The kids were exhausted and famished…(I guess our Starbucks break didn’t cut it).

Seeing the historic landmarks that we’ve read in textbooks was incredible. How cool is it to walk through Paul Revere’s house, hang out and shop around Faneuil Hall,  and stopping at the  Old State House where the Boston Massacre took place.  We ate at the Union Oyster House the day before and just couldn’t talk the kids into eating there for lunch again!

We had some much needed R & R  in between sight seeing.  The kids loved hanging out on the beach in Cape Cod, playing  good old arcade games, and splashing in the wave pool at the resort.

Our East Coast Vacation wrapped up  in the quaint city of  Providence, Rhode Island. I never imagined Rhode Island to be so adorable!! We were perfectly located forty five  minutes from Newport (Rhode Island’s tourist destination) and my sister in Conneticutt.

The Cliffwalk in Newport was stunning with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Newport Mansions on the other. There are ten Historic Mansions and we managed to tour only one–The Breakers, home of Cornelius Vanderbilt.  Unbelievable, amazing, and outrageous are just a few words that come to mind for this place!!

Visiting Ground Zero and Remembering September 11th~

After a fabulous time on our mother and daughter trip to New York City last Spring,  we decided to return with the guys checking out several of  NYC attractions. We took our first subway ride down to Ground Zero where the World Trade Center once stood.

We followed the crowd to St. Paul’s Chapel which was located across from the Twin Towers. Miraculously, St. Paul’s was untouched while surrounding buildings suffered damage and the church served as a place of refuge for families of the victims of 9-11.

One of the booths at St. Paul’s was filled with badges of  firemen, policemen and service workers.  On the other side of the Chapel, was a little cot with stuffed animals as a part of the display that was once used night after night by family members of the victims, waiting with hope for news of their loved ones.

The Ground Zero Rebuilding Project was  underway blocking entrance into Ground Zero, but that didn’t stop tourists from coming to the area for a glimpse of what is now void of the two skyscrapers that once towered the New York City skyline.

There were moments while touring Ground Zero that sent chills through my body. I couldn’t resist tears as we walked through the church and saw several powerful images and memorabilia stationed all around.

Remembering 9-11 and the innocent lives taken by such diabolic acts of terrorism.

May God’s love and grace continue to be with the families of September 11th, 2001 victims and all those who have been affected.
