The True Story of St. Nicholas

When our kids were younger we used to share with them each year ‘the real story of St. Nicholas‘, which unfortunately is rarely heard of in our society today. The truth is, we never wanted our kids to “believe” in Santa Claus. We didn’t include him in our Christmas celebration because we wanted them to understand from the beginning the real reason for why we celebrate Christmas, and that is first and foremost because it’s Jesus’ birthday- and that’s the greatest story of Christmas.

Secondly, we wanted them to know the source of all their gifts, which is a blessing that comes from God. We didn’t want to have to break the news to them when they were older that Santa never really existed in the first place. For us, that was just not how we wanted our kids to remember Christmas.

If Santa Claus is a part of your Christmas celebration, that’s your freedom to choose in having him as a part of your festivity. But our choice remains to share the real story behind St. Nicholas.

I thought of writing a whole post on it, but I came across this great video today and if you are not familiar with the real story of St. Nicholas…check out this video below by CBN:

Duong, Thanks for sharing! It’s a story I’ve read before many times, but it’s great to see it in a version that’s easy to pass along. Thanks for putting it together.
