Help For Haiti

by Duong Sheahan on January 16, 2010

Like many, I’ve been following as much as time allows with Haiti and the relief efforts primarily through Twitter. It’s sometimes overwhelming and heartbreaking to look at images, read reports and updates on the conditions. The world is watching and praying for quick intervention and relief to save as many lives as possible. It’s critical.

Two sisters from the US, Jamie and Ali McMutrie are in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and operate the Bresma Orphanage of about 150 children. The orphanage is uninhabitable and they are in critical need of food and water. You can check out their story on CNN.

Also, feel free to follow @janepitt for updates to learn more about the status of the Bresma orphanage. There are other orphanages as well that are in need of aid and supplies and I’m praying for them to get proper attention and care.

There are several organizations and ministries that are receiving donations for the Haiti Relief efforts…and below are a couple that I’ve chosen to support currently. Unfortunately, there are also people who are taking advantage of this tragedy; hence, we should all  be cautious about what charities we are giving to.

Red Cross by Texting “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross relief for Haiti!

Doctors Without Borders: International medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists who provides aid in nearly 60 countries including natural disaster areas. They’ve treated more than 2,000 patience currently in Haiti. I first learned about Doctors Without Borders when my daughter interviewed the creators of Xbox360 Beatles Rock Band for Young Chicagonista.  When you download the game via internet, a portion of the profit goes to this organization.

Samaritan’s Purse: Committed to helping the most poorest and most suffered parts of the world for past the 35 years led by Franklin Graham (Billy Graham’s son). Follow along to see the amazing work they’re doing in Haiti to provide, water food, shelter and necessities. They also have a Facebook Fan page.

My heart and prayers go out to all of the people devastated in Haiti for an expedient relief,  the Bresma Orphans as well other orphanages suffering, humanitarian workers, missionaries, and medical personnel.
