Love the little Creatures…as Long as They Stay Outside

by Duong Sheahan on June 22, 2010

Yes, I do love little creatures…God’s little creatures as long as they stay outside that is. I am not an animal lover, never cared to own a pet; however, my kids and their father love animals. I’ve been given power point presentations as to why we need a dog. My kids have gone as far as to research which dogs would best fit my personality, a dog who doesn’t shed, big, wild or spastic…you know the ones that jump all over you and put a run in your nylons when you walk in your friend’s front door? Well, that was back in the nylon days. And the worst, your friend think it’s cute.

Regardless of how I feel about owning a dog, my kids have felt that I’ve deprived them of having a man’s best friend.  I don’t know what it will take me to give in to their desires for a dog, but for now, I’m pretty stiff about having my home be a no pet zone. I know, it sounds really mean.

I must say, the kids have brought home gold fish from Vacation Bible School which lasted about 3 days before they bellied up and flushed down the toilet. I gave in to a pet hamster, but the kids forgot to shut the cage once while it was in our basement and it got away. We never found it, assuming that it found a crack in the foundation and ran away. Oh poor thing.

The most recent pet we got were to pretty little parakeets. My daughter’s power point presentation sold me on these adorable little birds. I was actually excited about them…and off we went to pet store to purchase them.  They lasted about 9 months because of they were often too loud and annoying. A friend of my daughter’s happily took them from us.

But, I have found a fascination for my feathered friends that have been visiting our back deck the past couple of years. I’ve determined that the birds are much better in the outdoor environment that in my home. Since I’ve started my morning at my bay window with coffee and a camera always near. Oh, and it’s a new camera my husband bought me for Christmas…I thought it would be a great way to start learning how to use it with these little creatures.

I think I’m now becoming a little obsessed with the backyard birds and other little creatures that come by. Not one day goes by that I don’t get to see the cardinal family…the mama, papa, and babies. From finches of varying yellow to black and white striped woodpecker. Our most newest friend is a chipmunks who comes to feast off of the bird seeds that fall beneath the deck.

It’s wonderful to be able to stop and smell the roses, or should I say notice God’s beautiful little creatures right outside my window. It makes me want to hum that old hymn we used to sing in church growing up, “All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.”
