My father taught me one of the greatest principles in life: live to give. Even we have little, give from what we have to those who have even less. In the past 36 years since we’ve lived in America my father lives by example, constantly giving of himself.
If there’s a hurt that he’s aware of, he’ll find a way to fill that hurt, if there’s a need, he’ll find a way to meet that need. My father was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” in 1984 in our hometown of Beloit, Wisconsin where we grew up as a result of his tireless efforts to help others. We’ve been able to watched and learn from his generosity; whether it’s giving of his time or his money. He has demonstrated a servant’s heart.
My inspirations for giving have come from my father, the Bible, and seeing others come together to help those in times of need. We truly are more blessed to give than to receive. (Acts 20:35)
The organizations that I support are primarily through our church; however, there are other needs that are close to my heart because of various tragedies and disasters. Due to the recent Haiti earthquake on January 12th, I’ve chosen to support the Haiti Relief efforts through these organizations below (others may be added as I learn more).
If you do not have an organization that you are currently giving to, please consider giving to one of these below.
The Red Cross: Texting “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross relief for Haiti!
Doctors Without Borders: An international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists who provides aid in nearly 60 countries including natural disaster areas. They’ve treated more than 2,000 patience currently in Haiti.
Samaritan’s Purse: A 35 year ministry reaching out to the poorest and most afflicted countries led by President Franklin Graham, son of Evangelist Billy Graham. They are currently providing relief in Haiti by producing a half-million gallons of fresh water daily.
Bresma Orphanage: This organization has truly touched my heart. Two sister from the US run an orphanage in Porte-au-Prince with 150 orphans who are currently in critical need of Water. There is strong efforts underway to evacuate the orphans and bring them to the US.
Here’s an additional list of Good Charities that you can check out.
